Coffee roasting is one of the most crucial stages on the way of coffee beans to the consumer’s cup. The raw coffee is heat-treated and converted into roasted coffee, ready for brewing. The process is carried out at temperatures over 200 °C and lasts about 15-20 minutes. Roasting requires even heating of the coffee beans and strict temperature control.
Traditionally, people roasted coffee using a simple device, which is a drum with raw coffee beans rotating over a fire. The most common modern coffee roasters use the same principle. The roasters are equipped with electronic systems for controlling the temperature and roasting time, blowing hot air over the beans in the drum.
There are four main types of coffee roasts: light roasts, medium roasts, medium-dark roasts & dark roasts. Each coffee variety requires individual roasting to reveal its flavor.
